Introduction

Research shows that surgical site infection (SSI) is a common health issue among surgical patients because it increases mortality, length of hospitalization, morbidity, medical expenses, rate of re-surgery and rate of re-admission (Anggrahita, Wardhana & Sudjatmiko, 2017). Similarly, Privitera Pierpaolo, Costa, Brusaferro, Chirletti, Crosasso, Massimetti, and Viale, 2017) state that SSI is among the most prevalent healthcare-associated infections. Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) is widely used to reduce the incidence of preoperative skin sepsis. The purpose of this paper is to provide a discussion comparing the research questions, sample population and limitations of the eight peer-reviewed journals. Finally, the paper will present a conclusion that integrates recommendations for further research.
