IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing

Nursing practice is rapidly changing. The enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) contributed to significant demand for nurses. Conversely, changes in healthcare policy have transformed nursing in terms of provision of affordable care to the aging and diverse populace (Hassmiller & Reinhard, S. 2015). Nurses make the largest percentage of healthcare professionals. Thus the workforce is better placed to partner and lead teams that provide care across various settings and continuum. Currently, the minimum education requirements for registered nurses (RNs) include diploma, Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) and Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN).

However, when seeking healthcare services, patients are not concerned about the nurse level of education. Nevertheless, higher nursing education is associated with improved patient outcomes, shorter hospital stays, reduced cases of death and reduced healthcare cost (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2014). In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) launched report that presents recommendations regarding nurses’ roles in the current healthcare backdrop. After the report, the Robert Wood Foundation and American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) launched a campaign to facilitate the implementation of IOM recommendations (Thomas, Servello & Williams, 2017). The future of nursing is discussed through the effect of the IOM report and its impact on nursing practice.
