Essay Title:
‘Identify a global health challenge and evaluate the relevant policies and public health practices in relation to the role of the future nurse. Evaluate partnership approaches in relation to tackling the global health inequality and discuss initiatives used to address the issue.’

Learning outcomes:

This essay requires you to evaluate and critically discuss.
· To evaluate you must provide your opinion or verdict on whether an argument, or set of research findings, is accurate. This should be done in as critical a manner and using relevant literature and data.
· To critically discuss, you must have weighed up the strengths and weaknesses of a theory, concept (or work of some sort), and wrote about this in detail – considering various relevant issues and viewpoints.

It may be helpful to identify a global health challenge AND highlight a specific country. You can then use your chosen country to evaluate and discuss how it is addressing and tackling the main issues.
For example – HIV and South Africa or Type 2 diabetes and India. You then have the opportunity to evaluate and analyse policies, inequalities, care provision, cultural factors, beliefs etc and compare these to the UK
Background to chosen country e.g. Population, life expect, major cause of deaths, health services (Just a few sentences)
Challenge in chosen country (keep this brief, as you have already written about this in length in your poster!)
Example: data which includes: Deaths, DALYs (Deaths Plus Disability from a certain condition) trends (going up or down), epidemiology (who does it affect more, e.g. HIV in developing countries, more young people, women and children, sex workers)

Just a brief background in relation to your challenge in the UK e.g. Deaths, DALYs, is it increasing or decreasing. Who does it affect more?

Global Policies in relation to your Challenge e.g. WHO, UNAIDs, UNICEF, UNFPA (United Nation’s Population Fund) SDGs.
Policies in relation to your Challenge in your chosen country, e.g. MoH, Govt documents, IHME country profiles. CDC (For USA only)
Policies in relation to your Challenge in UK, e.g. PHE, MoH, Dept Social Services. NICE guidelines
They could be a health promotion initiative; or a healthcare initiative; social policy; professional issue etc
Critically discuss the selected initiatives/policies- discuss any weaknesses and any positives- evaluate and discuss. Compare the initiatives between your chosen international country and the UK, related to the identified global health challenge. It must be an evidenced based critical discussion, using relevant literature and data. Harvard referencing must be used throughout the essay.

Partnerships/Collaboration. HP/PH, and Inequalities.
Partnership approaches in relation to your challenge
Consider the services/ organisations/ charities/ voluntary agencies, who work collaboratively or in partnership to tackle the identified global health challenge. These may extend beyond traditional health services/ systems. Examples include Women’s groups, Children Charities UNICEF, NGOs, Oxfam, Save the Children. Gates Foundation, Dept for International Development (which is the Aid Agency for UK). USAID (Aid agency for USA).

Link this with Inequalities, Define Inequalities, Consider whether health inequalities exist and how these are tackled -how does it impact on your challenge or how does your challenge affect/impact health inequalities, e.g. Marginalised communities, the poor, the position of women or sex workers or BAME or LGBT groups?

Identification of specific determinants of health related to the identified health challenge would be advisable. Consider whether a specific population (or group within a population) is a greater risk in relation to the chosen global health challenge
What HP/PH initiatives are taking place. This part can link with the discussion around the role of the nurse. What Health Promotion and Public health initiatives are working to tackle your challenge. You may wish to identify a relevant model of health and include this within your analysis of the approaches employed to tackle the identified challenge
What is the role of the nurse in all of this? What does the NMC say? What initiatives in nursing are trying to tackle these issues, e.g. specialist comm nurses, nurse consultants, global initiatives, Nursing in your own country, the International Council of Nurses, Int Code of Nursing Ethics. The role of the Nurse can be interwoven throughout the essay it does not have to be towards the end. 3 p’s in public health nursing.

You do not have to do the essay in this format you can organise it in whatever way you want but it should have these elements in the essay to achieve the LOs. You must check through your essay and ensure that you have evaluated and critically discussed!
