Through coordination, nurses can work with physicians and informaticists to reduce overutilization while improving underutilization. For instance, nurses can coordinate with physicians to integrate healthcare information technologies (HIT) to promote effective documentation of healthcare services. Ellen et al. (2018) argue that proper documentation can reduce the overutilization of healthcare services. In some cases, overuse of healthcare services arises due to patients’ inadequate knowledge about the cost of care. Thus, nurses can collaborate with physicians, case managers, pharmacists, and case managers to ensure that patients are not over-utilized.
The environment of diversity and cultural awareness among healthcare providers
A culturally competent healthcare team can improve health outcomes and quality of care to ethnically diverse healthcare consumers (Jongen et al., 2018). Moreover, healthcare professionals play an integral role in determining the nature of interactions and patient experiences when accessing care. Cultural differences between healthcare consumers and providers can lead to disempowerment, dissatisfaction, miscommunication, and mistrust. Therefore, an environment that promotes diversity and cultural awareness among providers is important in building a strong healthcare team and enhancing care delivery. Jongen et al. (2018) also found that cultural diversity and awareness are related to increased patient satisfaction, adherence to treatment regimens, information seeking, and sharing. Hence, an environment that provides cultural awareness and diversity emphasizes the cultural competence of healthcare providers in relevant skills, attitudes, and knowledge for effective response to sociocultural issues arising during clinical interactions.
