Program design
Tell us about a healthcare program within your practice. What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program?
Surgical site infection (SSI) is a leading hospital-acquired infection (HAI). According to Anggrahita, Wardhana, and Sudjatmiko (2017), SSIs account for about 14% to 16% of nosocomial infections among surgical patients. However, it is challenging to properly these infections. My organization has 20 long-term facilities. While dealing with infection control for the last 6 months, I have discovered that a significant rate of SSI comes from surgical patients. Therefore, the organization is focusing on developing a healthcare program to reduce the rate of SSI in surgical patients by implementing sepsis solutions such as chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG). The use of CHG has considerably reduced the rate of SSI across the organization. This is consistent with a study by George, Klika, and Higuera (2017), which demonstrates that CHG is an effective solution for decreasing not only HAIs but also skin infections. Nonetheless, CHG is only effective in lowering SSI rates if applied 2 to 5 separate applications before a surgical procedure. For that reason, the program will involve implementing CHG solutions to reduce pre-surgery, rehospitalizations, and lengthy hospital stays while improving patient outcomes. In this case, nurses will be educated on the proper application of CHG. The program’s cost would entail education providers across the organization and the cost of training material.
