The US healthcare system is driven by cost and quality. According to Weston and Roberts (2013), these drivers focus on improving public health, reducing medical expenses, and enhancing patients’ experience. However, due to increased nursing shortages, the quality of care has been significantly compromised. Nurses are leaving practice due to cost-related factors. Johnson-Carlson, Costanzo and Kopetsky ( 2017) state that nursing shortages lead to missed nursing care, high nurse turnover, increased mortality rates, low satisfaction and negative patient events. Inadequate staffing levels adversely affect the quality of care because there is a high patient-to-nurse ratio, resulting in significant errors. Nurse leaders should be in a position to promote improved health outcomes that can be achieved through efficient staffing programs. Evidence shows that nurse staffing initiatives should emphasize fulfilling patient acuity levels and factors that influence staffing (Johnson-Carlson, Costanzo & Kopetsky, 2017).
